All Gain, No Pain with "Cosmetics" Enhancements
It seems to begin around age 42 or so; you look in the mirror and notice changes that are barely perceptible to anyone else, but that are magnified in your view. Your lips look thinner, your eyes seem droopy and the skin on your face is not quite as taut as it used to be. And you’re NOT happy about it. Before considering plastic surgery, try these tricks of the trade from professional make-up artist, Béke Beau.
It all starts at the top with the eyebrows. “One thing a lot of women don’t think about is the impact of eyebrows. Imagine that you’re framing a picture; consider your brows to be the outer most edge of the frame. Train the eye up, and it will make the brows look lifted,” she explains.
First, brush up the hairs of the brow so it brings height to your eyes. “That’s an instant eye lift,” says Beau. Start filling them in along the top line of the brow using powder or pencil, and follow the natural brow line. To help create the perfect frame, Beau prefers products that are formulated specifically for eyebrows, such as those by Anastasia of Beverly Hills.
The shape of the face is next. You want to start with an even skin tone – Beau likes to use MAC Face and Body Foundation, which leaves a nice dewy finish. It’s important not to overdo any kind of liquid product that can settle into fine lines and exaggerate them.
To give your face more definition, Beau relies on bronzer in a universal color like NARS Laguna. Many women tend to be paler underneath the chin. To draw the eyes away from this area, apply the bronzer with a fan brush just under the chin, which darkens it so that it appears to recede. If you have some jowling, sweep a bit of bronzer along the jaw line, too. To finish the faux face lift, apply your regular blush on the apples of the cheeks, and blend it upward into the hair line.
A fuller lip completes the picture. Beau emphasizes the importance of starting with a lip moisturizer, “Lips are one of the most under moisturized areas of the body. To really get moisture into your lips, first use vegetable-based lip products, not ointments like Vaseline or Aquaphor, which should be used afterward to lock in moisture. My favorite lip moisturizer is Andalou Naturals Argan + Mint Lip Remedy. Apply it at night, in the morning and underneath lip products.”
Rather than getting lip injections to fill out thinned lips, first apply lip liner in a shade that’s close to your natural color to give your lips definition. Then apply a vibrant color lipstick that’s not too dark. The darker the lipstick, the smaller your lips will look.
“One of the most important things that women should have is a basic sheer lip gloss. It doesn’t get used often enough, and it goes a long way in making the lips look fuller and moister,” concludes Beau.
Just a few painless strokes of a brush and traces of a pencil can give you radical results that will have you smiling at your reflection rather than cringing as you age.
