4 Ways to Anti-Age Your Skin
In your teens and early 20s, you can’t imagine what old age will look like on you. And then as your 20s become your 30s, you start looking at the fine lines around your eyes and wonder – how bad will this get?!
“We’re our own worst critics when it comes to our skin and our bodies,” says vir tú aesthetician Tara Ammon. “The good thing is – there’s lots you can do to help age-proof your skin so that you don’t look old before your years.”
Ammon offers these 4 tips for women of all ages:
Use sunscreen EVERY DAY.
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office on Women’s Health, the best way to prevent signs of aging is also the best way to prevent skin cancer: Protect yourself from the sun. Ammon recommends using a sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) from 30 to 50 that contains both titanium and zinc oxide.
Drink water.
“Your skin reflects what’s going on in your diet. Drinking water is essential for keeping skin hydrated. Combine this with a healthy diet that’s loaded with colorful fruits and veggies and good skin care for healthy, nourished skin,” notes Ammon.
Cleanse, moisturize and use vitamin C.
Women in their 30s and 40s tend to become more concerned with eye creams that promise wrinkle reduction. But the best way to improve the overall look of your skin is with a complete regimen that includes cleansing, exfoliating, and moisturizing – with the addition of a vitamin C serum. “You’re never too young to use vitamin C. It lightens and brightens the skin making it more luminous. Use it every morning and follow up with moisturizer that includes sunscreen,” advises Ammon.
Limit alcohol and don’t smoke.
Cigarettes and alcohol can do a lot of damage to your skin. Smoking asphyxiates skin cells, which is why smokers have very dull skin. In addition, drinking alcohol dilates the blood vessels giving skin a red, ruddy look.
Ammon notes that when it comes to anti-aging skin care products, a higher price doesn’t necessarily translate into a higher quality product. Be an educated consumer. Read the ingredients and know what to look for in an anti-aging creams or serums. And, don’t be fooled by advertising claims that sound too good to be true. In the long run, going to a professional aesthetician who can help you understand your skin care needs is the best investment you can make.
