Abracadabra—Shrink My Pores!
Have you fallen victim to flashy advertising claims for creams that “shrink” your pores and promise “flawless” skin? And then you use them, look at your skin and see very little difference?
The unfortunate fact is that you CAN’T actually shrink your pores. But you can create the appearance of smaller pores.
According to vir tu aesthetician, Kimberly McGrady, it all comes down to hydration. “As we age, the skin loses collagen, elasticity, and moisture,” says McGrady. “This dryness can make skin imperfections appear more prominent than they actually are.”
Ultimately, shrinking your pores is an optical illusion. So other than getting rid of your magnifying mirror and drinking large amounts of water, how can you create the illusion of smaller pores? You need good skin care, hydrating products and facials — all of which can help bring moisture back to the skin.
“There are a number of solutions — over-the-counter products, prescription topical products such as retinol, and specific facials as well as the recommended homecare that goes with them. If you invest in facials, make sure to maintain the homecare to fully reap the benefits of this restorative spa treatment,” suggests McGrady.
Hydrating skin creams and cleansers can range from $10 to $250. Estee Lauder Idealist, Olay Skin Smoothing Scrub, Philosophy Help Me, and La Mer: The Regenerating Serum, all claim to “help minimize the look of large pores.” McGrady notes that the success of the product really has to do with the reaction of each individual’s skin type: “You don’t have to empty your pocketbook to have good skin. But higher end products sometimes work better or faster because of the quality of the ingredients.”
If you choose to do facials, it’s best to first consult with your aesthetician to discuss what you’re trying to achieve. She can explain techniques like exfoliation, microdermabrasion, or peels that may help you get what you’re looking for. It’s important to find someone who has your best interest and goals in mind.
“If you’re really trying to tackle or correct a problem, then you need to do facials more often,” explains McGrady. “But once your skin is refined and your pores are looking smaller, you only need to come in every 3 to 6 months.”
